Philippines’ NBI arrests 15 in Mandaluyong crypto investment scam bust, seizes devices
MANILA — The Philippines’ National Bureau of Investigation arrested 15 people in Mandaluyong City in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency investment scam, after a raid that uncovered multiple computer devices and digital evidence tied to the operation.
The suspects were apprehended on May 9 during an anti-cybercrime operation carried out by the NBI Dangerous Drugs Division, with support from the Digital Forensic Laboratory Division and the Philippine Air Force Intelligence Unit. Authorities said the raid was conducted under a Warrant to Search, Seize and Examine Computer Data, allowing investigators to inspect devices on site.
Law enforcement said the group was allegedly operating from a condominium unit and using a spoofed website to lure victims into investing in cryptocurrency. The NBI said the setup appeared to be part of a broader scamming network engaged in large-scale online fraud.
Among those arrested were one Chinese national, one Malaysian national, 12 Filipino men and one Filipino woman, according to local reports. Multiple desktop computers and other devices were seized and later subjected to forensic examination, which investigators said revealed data linked to computer-related forgery under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
The suspects now face inquest proceedings for alleged violations of Republic Act No. 10175, including social engineering schemes, misuse of devices and aiding or abetting cybercrime. Authorities said the investigation is continuing to identify additional members of the suspected syndicate and to trace possible victims.
Crypto investment scams have become a growing concern in the Philippines and across the region, where fraudsters often use fake trading platforms, high-pressure sales tactics and promises of quick returns to recruit victims. The NBI has stepped up enforcement against such schemes as digital fraud cases rise alongside broader online investment activity.
