Ripple Brings XRP and RLUSD Into Stripe and Tempo’s AI Payments Standard

Ripple has expanded support for XRP and its RLUSD stablecoin in a new developer update tied to Stripe and Tempo’s AI-focused payment standard, giving builders another way to let software agents pay for digital services. The move centers on the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, an open standard co-authored by Stripe and Tempo for machine-to-machine transactions.

The update was delivered through version 1.1 of Ripple’s XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit, which now includes support for both MPP and the Open Wallet Standard. In practical terms, the kit is designed to help developers build AI agents that can pay for data, computing, APIs, and other online services without using a traditional checkout flow.

Under the new framework, AI agents can use XRP and XRP Ledger-issued assets such as RLUSD to settle payments within the protocol. Some reporting says XRP is especially suited for recurring or session-based payments, while RLUSD can be used for one-time transactions inside the system. The integration positions the XRP Ledger as a settlement layer for these agent-driven payments rather than as a consumer payments product on Stripe itself.

That distinction matters. Several reports noted that the update does not mean Stripe has started accepting XRP or RLUSD through its main merchant or consumer checkout services.15 Instead, XRP Ledger support has been added inside the open MPP standard, which Stripe and Tempo developed for software agents that need to make automated payments over the internet.

RippleX product lead Jazzi Cooper said the goal is to make XRP and RLUSD “first-class” options for developers building AI payment workflows. The broader idea is to remove friction from small, programmatic transactions that AI systems increasingly need to make when consuming digital resources.

The integration also reflects a broader push to connect blockchain rails with emerging AI commerce models. By pairing Ripple’s developer tooling with Stripe and Tempo’s open standard, the companies are signaling that agent-to-agent payments could become a meaningful use case for crypto infrastructure.

Market reactions were swift, with some outlets reporting a modest lift in XRP’s price after the announcement. Even so, the software appears to remain in testing, and no commercial usage figures or major client deployments have been disclosed yet.

For Ripple, the update strengthens XRP’s role in programmable payments and gives RLUSD a more visible function in the growing AI payments niche. For developers, it adds a ready-made path to experiment with autonomous payment flows using assets on the XRP Ledger.
